What Is Canoe Camp?

DSC03087Canoe Camp is an outdoor experience for everyone in the 7th grade and up. It is a week long adventure of paddling down the Sacramento River, camping, and growing closer to God.

Camp begings at Marysville Church on the Nazarene in Marysville, California at 3pm on Sunday. Then everyone loads up their gear, and makes the drive up to the Gateway Community Church in Redding. It's the first adventure that will certainly be one of many to be taken on the bus! After arriving at camp, everyone is expected to help out with set up. That's one of the ways that this camp is able to function - by everyone working together.

DSC09915The rest of the week will follow a pretty consistant schedule. Campers will get up at dawn for breakfast, then get what they need for the day and shuttle down to the river. Campers will then paddle down the river for a few hours until lunch, which is packed along in the canoes. After lunch there's a couple more hours of paddling until they reach the pull out for the day. An average time on the river is about five hours, so plenty of sunscreen is required. After pulling out of the river, everyone will load up and head back to camp.

DSC03048In the afternoon there will be games to play, archery, shooting, woodcarving, but many will just want to hop in the shower or relax for a while before dinner. After dinner we enjoy chapel time followed by dessert and bedtime.

Campers, of course, will need to bring their own clothes, sleeping bag, toothbrush, and anything else that they could need for camping. The camp will provide everything else including canoes, life jackets, meals, and spiritual support. For a more specific list go to the what to bring page.

No canoe experience is necessary to enjoy canoe camp! Our staff will give training on Monday to everyone, and campers will learn everything they'll need to know about canoeing, and probably more than they'd like to. This training will include time in the canoe before setting out on the first day on the river.
